Foot Care Visits – All Settings
(Residential, Group Home, LTC, Retirement Homes)
Outbreaks
If a facility or unit is in outbreak, all foot care services will be paused until the outbreak resolves or as directed by facility management.
Health and Risk Assessment
During every visit, the provider conducts a Health and Risk Assessment, reviewing:
Health history and medications
Circulation, sensation, and overall foot health
Skin and nails
The assessment determines risk factors and informs a personalized treatment plan.
Infection Control & Safety
All supplies are sterile (autoclaved) and/or single-use.
Feet are disinfected before and after care, without soaking, following Public Health best practices.
Medical foot care only – this is not a pedicure.
Toe and Finger Nail Care
Nails are trimmed and filed using new, sterile nippers.
Cuticles are not pushed back or trimmed, as this is medical, not cosmetic care.
Referrals and Recommendations
Foot care providers may provide referrals or recommendations to:
Family doctors
Private chiropodists or podiatrists
RNs, RPNs, and PSWs cannot diagnose or prescribe treatment.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
All providers wear gowns, gloves, procedural masks, and shields/goggles during care.
All providers are COVID-vaccinated.
Professional Standards and Documentation
Foot care providers are independent practitioners responsible for their own health and public safety.
Providers are required to document all care delivered.
Charting remains solely with the provider and is shared only with the client’s consent with other healthcare team members.
